Port Said, Egypt: Private tours and shore excursions with local guides
Discover Port Said :
For a day out in and around Port Said, there are a few must-sees and interesting activities to explore. Here are a few suggestions for making the most of your day:
1. The Suez Canal
Walk along the Canal: The canal is one of the highlights of Port Said. A walk along its banks will allow you to see ships of all sizes passing through this strategic link between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea.
View of the Parade of Ships: There are several vantage points from which you can watch the passing ships up close, often impressive for the size and diversity of the vessels. You can also take a ferry for a different viewpoint.
2. Port Said Military Museum
This museum tells the story of Egypt's military history and in particular Port Said's role in the 1956 Suez crisis. There are exhibitions of weapons, military vehicles and historical documents. It's the perfect place to learn more about the city's strategic role.
3. Historic buildings and colonial architecture
Port Said boasts a number of colonial buildings that bear witness to its history under European influence. A stroll through the city centre will allow you to admire this unique architecture, with its wrought-iron balconies and colourful facades.

4. Port Said Lighthouse
Built in 1869, this lighthouse is a landmark of the city. Although it is not open to the public, you can admire its architecture from the outside and take a walk in the surrounding area.
5. The Port Said Souk
Stop off at the local markets to buy souvenirs, discover Egyptian handicrafts or sample local specialities.
6. Excursion to Ismailia
If you fancy a little getaway, Ismailia is about an hour's drive away. This town is situated on the shores of Lake Timsah and offers gardens and waterside walks. It is also famous for its seafood restaurants.
7. Excursion to Cairo: Pyramids of Giza and Sphinx
Early morning departure: It is recommended that you leave early, ideally before 7am, to maximise your time in Cairo and avoid traffic jams. A guide or private driver can be arranged for the day for added convenience.
The Pyramids of Giza: When you arrive in Cairo, head straight for the Giza plateau. Here you can admire the three famous pyramids - Khéops, Khéphren and Mykérinos - which are must-sees in ancient Egypt. It is also possible to enter some of the pyramids (at an additional cost) to discover their interiors.
The Sphinx of Giza: Right next to the pyramids, the Sphinx, with its lion-like body and human face, is one of Egypt's most iconic symbols. Be sure to take the time to get up close to enjoy its majesty and capture some photos.
Cairo Museum (optional): If you still have some time, you might consider visiting the Egyptian Museum in Cairo to admire the vast collection of treasures, including Tutankhamun's artefacts. Note that visiting the museum will take time, so plan around your schedule.
Lunch: A local lunch with a view of the pyramids is a unique experience. Many of the restaurants in Giza offer stunning views while serving traditional Egyptian dishes.
Return to Port Said: Plan to leave Cairo in the early afternoon to avoid returning to Port Said too late.
