Rome, Italy: Private tours and shore excursions with local guides
Discover Rome :
Rome is one of the oldest continuously-inhabited cities in the world. It was founded by the legendary Romulus and Remus, twin sons of the god Rhea Silvia. Rome grew to become a major city with a rich culture, and many important ancient and medieval sites.
The Roman Empire began in Italy, and eventually spread across much of Europe and beyond. The Roman Republic became the first widespread government in world history, and remained the dominant power in Europe for several centuries. The Roman Empire finally fell in AD 476, following centuries of misrule and barbarian invasions. Despite its eventual demise, the Romans left an enduring legacy. They developed technology like the stirrup and advanced road building techniques that were still being used in medieval Europe hundreds of years later. They built many important cities, including Constantinople (now known as Istanbul) which served as the capital of the Byzantine Empire for more than a thousand years. They also left behind some impressive architecture like the Colosseum and Pantheon, two of Rome's most iconic landmarks.
Rome is a huge, cosmopolitan city with endless possibilities for exploration. The Eternal City is best enjoyed on foot, whether exploring the historic centre or the outer districts such as the Trastevere neighbourhood. There are so many things to see and do in Rome, but you can start by taking in some of the major highlights.
One of the most popular sites in Rome is the Colosseum, which was built by Emperor Vespasian to host gladiatorial games. It is one of Rome’s most recognizable landmarks and has been standing since AD 80. Another site that should not be missed is the Vatican Museums, which includes a world-class art collection as well as religious artifacts dating back to ancient times. A must-see attraction in Rome is Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, which houses some of the world’s finest artworks including works by Renaissance artists such as Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci. Finally, there are several other important attractions in Rome worth checking out, including St Peter’s Basilica and the Palatine Hill.
