The town of Roses is located in the province of Girona in the north-eastern Catalonia.
It sits on the Mediterranean coast, and was founded by the Romans as Caer Rosas. It later became known as Caer Roseus - 'the city of roses'.
The town prospered under the protection of the Knights Templar and later the Hospitallers, but it was ruined during the Spanish Civil War.
However, it has since been rebuilt and now boasts hotels, restaurants, shops and beaches.
There is also a well-preserved castle that can be seen from many vantage points in town.
