For this visit, we will explore the castle of Beynac, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, La Roque Gageac, Domme, the gardens of Marqueyssac and Sarlat.
The sightseeing tours of the Dordogne River leave from Bordeaux, and the visit lasts about 8 hours.
The castle of Beynac is one of the most famous and best preserved medieval fortresses in France, if not the world. Its strategic location and defensive construction make it virtually impenetrable.
Opposite the castle of Beynac is another medieval fortress, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle. This castle belonged to King Richard the Lionheart and today houses an impressive collection of medieval weapons. You will see maces and halberds, English bows and decorative crossbows. There are also functional catapults and trebuchets - some days you can see them firing!
La Roque Gageac is one of the "most beautiful villages in France". Nestled between rocky cliffs and the Dordogne River, it is a nice place to take a little walk, maybe do some shopping and take some pictures.
Not far from La Roque Gageac, the itinerary takes you to Domme, a fortified bastide village at the top of a hill. It is built on top of the cliffs with a huge and spectacular panoramic view over the valley.
Sarlat is a wonderful French town with cobbled streets in the old town. You will find the largest collection of 11th century buildings in France.
